XBB.1.5 - What You Should Know

drpanda.substack.com

Good Morning Everyone!

A very immune evasive SARS-CoV-2 variant XBB.1.5 is quickly becoming dominant in the United States. Data from the CDC shows it’s already become nearly 41% of cases nationwide.

However, in the Northeast United States, it’s already the dominant variant accounting for around 75% of all cases. Some are calling it the ‘New York’ variant as they suspect it started there.

Data shows hospitalizations spiking with the new variant, especially among 70+. This hospitalization rate is the highest in New York since the original Omicron wave last year. Admittedly it is harder to gauge the severity vs the previous waves based on hospitalizations alone as they’ve changed the categorization since the Delta wave.

XBB is a recombinant variant of 2 different BA.2 strains, BJ.1 and BA.2.75 further mutated to XBB.1.5. One of the key mutations is F486P which allows the virus to better escape antibodies that neutralize the virus.

Looking at antibodies that neutralize #Omicron helps understand portion of antibody response to current vaccines/ infections that still neutralizes #Omicron. These antibodies often target sites 346, 348, 444, 456, 468, 475, 486, 487. Watch those sites for future mutations! (8/n)

University Of Tokyo Study:

To our knowledge, this is the first documented example of a SARS-CoV-2 variant increasing its fitness through recombination rather than single mutations.

@EmilyAnne_Smith @PaulLMMA F486P is a hell of a mutation, as @jbloom_lab's RBD heat map made clear many months ago. It's the #1 AA residue for RBD expression and ACE2 binding strength. It just took the virus a while to get over the 2-nuc-mutation barrier.

The heat map also displays how each mutation affects RBD expression, a proxy measure for stability. Of the 6 most common F486 mutations (V, I, S, L, A, and P), P imposes the lowest cost in RBD affinity loss & has the largest increase in RBD expression. 12/16 https://t.co/Qoips2rHqe

The virus muted to become even more evasive to our immune system and have a greater affinity to ACE2. These are the cells the spike protein binds to in our bodies. ACE2 receptors are found all over our body - in vital organs. XBB.1.5 is the most immune evasive variant to date.

Singapore, a mostly vaccinated country, had an XBB variant outbreak in October.

The rate at which XBB.1.5 has taken over the Northeast and (presumably soon) the rest of the country is extremely fast. Taking a look at all of the evidence leads me to believe this variant was formed as a result of the intense immune pressure by the virus to escape vaccine-induced antibodies. What we appear to have here is a direct result of vaccinating during a pandemic with a non sterilizing vaccine. We now have a virus that appears to possess greater antigenic escape and is more virulent.

Over the course of natural viral evolution and mutation do you think the virus will try to overcome the many antibodies your body produces via natural infection or the same antibody, in millions of people, that the vaccine produces? Answer: The virus will select the easier route - the vaccine-induced antibodies.

Even though it seems this variant is more concerning for the vaccinated without prior natural infection, I advise everyone to keep their immune systems healthy! Especially during the winter months, you could be VITAMIN D DEFICIENT. Vitamin D is essential for the immune system to function properly along with Vitamin C and zinc. FLCCC has a decent COVID prevention protocol.

No need to panic. I hope you will find this information informative and helpful.

Thanks for reading!

Variants being discussed most right now: 🧵 XBB.1.5 (Kraken). Very immune evasive *and* high ACE2 binding. Not a good combination. Descendant of XBB.1 (Hippogryph) and grandchild of XBB (Gryphon), which is a recombinant between BJ.1 x BM.1.1.1 (both in the BA.2 lineage).

I do not endorse this view. Simply sharing another point of view:

I wish all a prosperous 2023. However, in realty the XBB.1.5 SUPER variant is exploding in the USA, now responsible for >40% of all cases. Modeling all points to it being the deadliest wave in pandemic history. This will exceed all previous waves. #multiyearpandemic

Tweeps, the expert WhatsApp groups are kicking off. Kraken (XBB.1.5) is a variant of SARS-CoV-2 that you wouldn't want to catch. Cases are rising. It's time to ratchet up precautions. High-quality, close-fitting masks work. Avoiding crowds helps. Being outdoors helps. Stay safe.

I can confidently say XBB.1.5 will NOT approach the levels of hospitalizations and deaths seen in the initial Omicron wave in the US. However I do believe it will be the highest seen since then. Don't be panicked, be informed 👨‍🔬

Wow. XBB.1.5 more than doubled across the United States in 1 week, now ~40%, out-competing all variants

Is this the shit du jour being tossed about msm? Life's a gamble....from the moment your feet hit the floor in the morning. Somehow I've managed to escape every swine flu, bird flu, Zika virus, Covid 16,17,18, 19, Pox of the Week ....even the virulent platypus variant. People get sick....it's been going on for, gee....ever. You're either gonna get it or your not. Take care of yourself, don't buy into the next iteration of Savior shots and/or boosters and turn off the stupid, mind numbing control box of death....you'll be much better for it.

67, unvaxed, Covid in May 2022 which was basically a sinus infection that lasted a few days. Zero pharmaceuticals. Big on supplements. 7500 IU D3 during winter and 5000 during warmer months, Zinc, magnesium, NAC, B, C, krill oil, EVENING PRIMROSE oil, turmeric, iodine and others.

BP 117/78, blood work results yearly always great. This works for me. Could be genetics as well however have younger siblings who do not supplement and are on multiple pharmaceuticals
