Powerful New Antibody Treatment Maybe A Substitute for Vaccines
Discovered antibody neutralized all known SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern
One of the best tools we have to fight COVID-19 is Monoclonal Antibodies or mAbs. mAbs are laboratory produced proteins that act as human antibodies in the immune system. First approved in 1986 they have been used to fight all types of conditions including cancer, organ transplant rejection, nervous system disorders and of course COVID-19.
Unfortunately as the COVID-19 virus mutates the new variants are better at dodging the monoclonal antibody treatments. Eli Lilly’s bamlanivimab and Regeneron’s REGEN-COV are 2 examples of once effective mAbs treatments.
Scientists at Tel Aviv University have a potential scientific breakthrough. A team of scientists have isolated antibodies from the immune system of recovered COVID-19 patients and have demonstrated these antibodies are effective in neutralizing all known strains of the virus.
The antibodies they identified are so powerful in neutralizing the coronavirus that they could eliminate the need for more vaccine boosters.
“In the current study, we proved that two other antibodies, TAU-1109 and TAU-2310, which bind the viral spike protein in a different area from the region where most of the antibodies were concentrated until now (and were, therefore, less effective in neutralizing the original strain) are actually very effective in neutralizing the Delta and Omicron variants. According to our findings, the effectiveness of the first antibody, TAU-1109, in neutralizing the Omicron strain is 92%, and in neutralizing the Delta strain, 90%. The second antibody, TAU-2310, neutralizes the Omicron variant with an efficacy of 84%, and the Delta variant with an efficacy of 97%.”
A team at Boston Children’s Hospital have also developed an antibody that neutralized all known SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, including all Omicron variants.
Bottom line: These treatments are expensive. Regeneron cost $2,100 per unit plus administration costs. Also, Pfizer and Moderna will fight like hell to tell you these upcoming treatments won’t work. Just like they did with other possible treatments (Ivermectin?)
